ARTIST STATEMENT

My work as an artist is akin to that of a social scientist engaged in the research and observation of patterns, which are the dominant influence of my artwork and career. I am a hunter and gatherer of experiences-collecting and interpreting the stories of people's intra- and interpersonal struggles with one another and their environment serve as the framework for my art. I am a printmaker who uses a combination of traditional printmaking techniques, such as relief, intaglio, and screenprint, combined with hand-stitching, drawing, painting, and collage. This diversity of media allows for experimentation both on and off of the printing press. I am drawn to printmaking because it allows me to build, manipulate, and deconstruct patterns providing a context for the stories that I tell using paper, ink, and thread.

From seeds and plants to earth and clouds, my imagery is rooted in the observation of cycles and the relationship between landscape, narrative, and identity. The research and source material for my work is derived from pilgrimages across rural America-I photograph the landscape, draw native flora and fauna, write in my journal, and collect objects such as seeds, corn husks, and dirt to be used for printing. I like to think that there is an ecology to the artmaking process and resulting artworks-each action and reaction, each image added and erased-feeds and informs the next. The print becomes a map, a collection of visual data narrating my journey through a space that hovers between reality and fantasy.
